Four O'Clock Seeds - Yellow (Mirabilis Jalapa Yellow) plants thrive in all zones, blooming all summer long
Four O'Clock (Mirabilis Jalapa Yellow) - Hummingbirds will visit the garden all summer long! This sweetly scented perennial grows easily from Mirabilis Jalapa flower seeds and the hummingbirds love it. Four O'Clock plants are leafy, shrub-like, multi-branched tender perennials that typically grow 18 - 36 inches tall and just as wide. The flowers are fragrant and to some people the fragrance is vanilla scented. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and are formed singly or in clusters.
The Four O'Clock flowers are about an inch across at the end and about two inches long. On a sunny day, the flowers open in the late afternoon and wilt the next morning. If it is cloudy, the flowers may be open all day long.
Mirabilis Jalapa flower seeds may be sown directly into the garden in the spring in warm areas. In other areas with a late spring, start the flower seeds indoors about eight weeks before the final frost date for transplanting. Four O'Clock seedlings may be set in the garden at about the same time you would plant tomatoes. Allow about 12 inches between Four O' Clock plants. Mirabilis roots are tuberous and can be divided in early spring. Some gardeners will store the tubers indoors over the winter and then plant again in the spring.
