A delicious, tangy salad tomato, ripe just as the green fruit develops a yellow blush, accentuating the darker green stripes. The 3-4 oz. fruits are the ideal size for slicing into wedges for salads. Productive over a long season. Developed by Tom Wagner.
Green zebra (Lycopersicon esculentum "Green Zebra") is an open-pollinated tomato, producing 2- to 6-ounce green and yellow bi-colored fruits. These special fruits are round, relatively blemish-free beauties with green flesh and a bright, acidic flavor that complements other garden tomatoes. Green zebra vines reach about 5 feet long, making them excellent specimens for growing in containers due to their manageable size and small fruits. They begin fruiting in about 75 days from transplantation into a large container when given plenty of water and properly fertilized.
GENERAL GROWING INFORMATION

Place your pot in a location where it will get direct sun for at least 6 hours a day. Remove all but the top 2 or 3 sets of leaves from the tomato transplant. Fill the pot with commercial soil mix and plant the prepared tomato transplant so that 25 percent of the plant is above the top of the soil, which is 2 inches below the top of the pot.

Install a tomato cage in the pot immediately after planting, positioning it before the plant has gotten very big to prevent damaging the roots. Make sure that the tomato cage is firmly in place and will not accidentally fall out. Water until water runs out the bottom of the pot, to settle the soil.

Water your tomato plant every 5 to 7 days, or more often if the weather is hot and the tomato shows signs of water stress, such as wilt during midday. Apply a 20-20-20 fertilizer to your plant once or twice monthly.

Tie your green zebra tomato plant loosely to the cage with twine as it grows. Pinch back growing branches to 12 to 18 inches to create a bushy plant that is easier to manage. Continue feeding and watering your plant throughout the summer, gradually tapering off as fall approaches.

Begin checking green zebra fruits for ripeness about 75 days after transplantation. Look for fruits that have a slight yellow cast to their skin. Squeeze the fruits gently; ripe fruits will give slightly. Check fruits daily because "Green Zebra" is a determinate type of tomato, meaning that the majority of the fruits ripen at about the same time.
