Common Soapwort ( Saponaria officinalis ) is a vespertine flower , and a common perennial plant from the carnation family ( Caryophyllaceae ). * An herbaceous perennial, erect, with 3/4"white or pinkish fragrant flowers in terminal clusters and in the leaf axils, blooms throughout summer, spreads by creeping rhizomes, roots used as a soap substitute, grows on roadsides, native to Europe, but widely naturalized in the eastern U.S. Roots & seeds are poisonous.
* Soapwort's main medicinal use is as an expectorant. Its strongly irritant action within the gut is thought to stimulate the cough reflex and increase the production of a more fluid mucus within the respiratory passages
Cultivation
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 12 hoursStratification: warm statify for 2 to 4 weeks, cold stratify for 4 weeks, maintain even moisture during stratification
Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
