These seeds come from an orchard in Maine where trees were selected for cold hardiness and Apple cider production.
* Most of the parent trees of seed were planted before the year 1950 and have survived many cold harsh winters , root stock is often Siberian crab but tops are mostly old style Macs with choice new and heirloom types near by for a mix of possibilities , all with choice types that deal fine with the cold , especially attractive now that this last winter was quite harsh .
* Its a seed source that I am honored to work with because its the full time job of a grand son of the original orchard man that planted it from Maine Highland Forest in central Maine. A real American family farm story that is inspiring to see .
Growing Info:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days.
Germination: sow seed 1/4" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
I am impressed by your efforts and resilience in growing your apple trees! May I suggest to you to keep the trees in a pot until they are about 1.3-2ft tall (40-60cm). Carefully transplant without cutting off any of the roots. Best time to plant would be during spring time, once the threat of hard frost has passed. The planting hole should be much wider than the roots to allow them to grow easily. Water the tree in well to eliminate air pockets. Spread mulch of hay or wooden chips a few inches thick around the trees. Wait a month or two before considering adding a slow release nitrogen- source. You should not have to be watering it any more after the first year.Prune as little as possable the first few years so you don't delay fruit bearing
