Snapdragon Seeds - 'Arrow Yellow' -Bloom all Summer, Perennial

General Description

Commonly grown as an annual, snapdragon is actually a short-lived perennial that originates from southwestern Europe and the Mediterranean. In northern climates it is commonly grown as warm season bedding plant, and in southern areas, with excessively hot, humid summers and mild winters, it is an excellent winter annual

This old-fashioned, clump-forming bedding plant has medium green, lance-shaped leaves. From summer to fall it bears upright spikes of distinctly lipped flowers that snap open and shut when squeezed, hence the name “snapdragon”, though some cultivars have open, lipless flowers. Blooms come in shades of white, red, pink, yellow, purple and orange, depending on the cultivar. There are literally hundreds of selections to include the bronze-leaved, red-flowered ‘Black Prince’ and dwarf, spreading members of the Magic Carpet series.

Easy to grow and sun-loving, snapdragons grow best in sharply-drained fertile garden soil. They flower best if spent flower spikes are removed and plants are fed regularly. When weather is very hot they may cease from blooming for a spell. Enjoy these fine bedding plants in containers and mixed beds and borders. Tall snapdragons make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers.

Snapdragon plants can tolerate a light frost, so they can be set out as early as the ground can be worked. For the earliest blooms, sow Snapdragon seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before setting the plants out. Use quality starter mix and sow the Snapdragon flower seeds on the surface of the pre-moistened mix and gently press the seed in. Harden off the Snapdragon seedlings for 10 - 14 days before planting outdoors. Pinch back at the time of transplanting to encourage branching. For areas with mild winters, sow Snapdragon flower seeds outdoors in a sheltered seed bed in late summer. Transplant the young Snapdragon plants into their permanent location for blooms in winter and spring.
Snapdragons should be grown in rich, well-drained soil. Adding organic matter is very beneficial to the Snapdragon plants. Grow them in full sun, and space this tall variety 12 - 18 inches apart. Snapdragon care includes trimming the plants back after they are done blooming to promote a second flush of blooms. Snapdragons perform best in cooler summer climates. In hot regions, provide Snapdragon plants with some afternoon shade
