Maiden Pinks - ideal for the beginning gardener.
USDA Zone: 2-9
Maiden Pinks are easy-care perennials, ideal for the beginning gardener. Plants form a low, spreading evergreen mound of dark-green leaves, studded with bright cherry-red flowers in late spring, then on and off through the summer. Trim back lightly after first flowering. Good choice for poor soils, and hot, sunny sites. Also excellent in tubs and mixed containers.

Maiden Pink (Dianthus Deltoides ) - Grow this outstanding, low growing flower from Dianthus seeds! Commonly called Maiden Pink, this perennial remains green year round with 1 inch fragrant blooms of pink and red hues concentrated at the top during its blooming season from spring to summer. Dianthus Deltoides Maiden Pinks is a mat-forming species with dark green leaves and is so rewarding to grow. The Maiden Pink flowers keep their beauty even during the hottest summer months. It is a liberal self-sower, dropping its own flower seeds, so it will fill in nicely, making it a great ground cover or border plant.
Maiden Pink seeds take about 14 days to germinate. Sow flower seed indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost, and transplant when plants are 3 inches high. Or sow Dianthus flower seeds directly outside as soon as soil can be prepared and cover with 1/8 inch of topsoil. Might take a full year before flowering.

GROWING TIP
For early blooms, sow Dianthus seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before frost season is over. Use sterile starter mix and sow seeds on the surface. Barely cover Dianthus seeds with soil. Transplant seedlings when temperatures have warmed. Or sow Dianthus flower seed directly outside after frost season has passed and soil temperatures are warming to a minimum of 40 degrees or warmer. Broadcast flower seed and lightly rake in to the soil no more than 1/8th deep and keep flower seed moist until germination.
