Arenaria serpyllifolia or thyme-leaved sandwort is a plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. Wikipedia
Scientific name: Arenaria serpyllifolia
Higher classification: Arenaria
Wiry, grey-green, hairy annual, only about 15cm high, this tiny wildflower grows on old stone walls, dry bare ground and chalky places. It's a bushy little plant which has small white
starryflowers (5-6mm across) each with five pointed petals, shorter than the surrounding five pointed sepals. These flowers, which have yellowish anthers, bloom from May to September
and are borne in clusters on slender stems. The small, untoothed leavesare opposite, oval to lanceolate and without stalks. There is a fruitcapsule in autumn which is pear-shaped and has
little teeth at the apex. This is a native plant which belongs to the Caryophyllaceaefamily.
Sandworts like full sun and well-drained soil. Their shallow roots make the prone to drying out, so they may need water several times each week in hot weather. They are adaptable to various soil types, but prefer loose garden soil that has been amended with compost.
Care and Maintenance
Sandworts are virtually immune to pests and disease and require very little care besides watering.
The one other maintenance activity is to trim off the spent flowers after they fade in early summer. Giving the foliage a slight trim in early fall will keep the plants looking lush the following year. Where it is used as a groundcover it is feasible to use a lawnmower to trim sandwort.
