Swiss Chard Red (Beta Vulgaris ssp. Cicla Red) - You will want to grow this highly nutritious plant in your herb garden! Start Swiss Chard seeds and enjoy this red variety that is full of nutritious value. It contains 13 different polyphenol antioxidants including the cardio-protective flavonoid, kaempferol. It also contains an additional flavonoid called syringic acid which has had quite a large amount of current research done due to its properties that help regulate blood sugar. In addition to the antioxidants, Swiss Chard herb has vitamins E and K, along with magnesium, manganese and potassium.
This variety, Ruby Red, is quite striking with dark green leaves and bright red stems and veins. It is a hardy plant and related to the beet. Position Red Swiss Chard herbs in full sun. They thrives in soil that has had organic matter added. It is recommended to add a couple of inches of compost to the soil a few weeks before planting the Swiss Chard seeds. Work the compost into about 6 inches of soil, and the Swiss Chard herb will have the nutrition that it needs. Harvest can be in 50 to 60 days after planting the herb seeds.
Cut the Swiss Chard leaves close to the ground. Start with the oldest leaves first. The leaves do not last long, so plan on eating them quickly. Wash the leaves and stems in cold water and remove any dirt. The leaves can be prepared like spinach and the stalks can be prepared like asparagus.
How To Grow Red Swiss Chard: Plant Swiss Chard seeds directly outdoors in prepared soil a few weeks before the last expected frost. Lightly cover the Swiss Chard herb seeds. To keep a steady supply of Swiss Chard all summer, sow the herb seeds in succession, every 2 weeks.
