Delosperma Purple Ice Plant is a fast-growing ground cover which vigorously spreads its succulent olive green foliage and 2 inch bright purple blooms to beautify your landscape. The blooms act as a magnet for butterflies and have a long bloom time, late spring right into fall.
Just 6 inches high and spreading up to a foot wide, 'Stardust' Ice Plant is a great choice for containers as well as the garden. It will spill over the sides of flowerpots and baskets, trailing purple blooms will abound! Plant in the garden where it makes a ground covering carpet beneath bulbs, meanders around shrubs and perennials nicely, and generally fills in space wherever it's needed.
Sow purple Ice Plant seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost is predicted. Use starter trays and sterile potting mix. Press Ice Plant ground cover seeds into the soil but do not cover the seeds. Keep the seeds moist but not saturated until germination occurs. Transplant outdoors, 10 inches a part when temperatures are warmed. Find a sunny location with sandy, sharp-draining soil. In the hottest climates, Ice Plant would do well with some afternoon shade. The first year, give these ground cover plants good care, good soil and plenty of water and food, but then let it go. Delosperma is quite tolerant of drought, and actually prefers dry soil. Heat doesn't faze Ice Plant, and it tolerates quite a bit of humidity if it is not crowded among other plants that cut off the breezes and circulation. If you are trying to grow a section of garden that needs little water, Delosperma Floribundum Stardust is an excellent choice for a flowering ground cover plant.
