Orach
Atriplex hortensis
Native to the Alps, formerly called “mountain spinach”, an annual species growing to 6’ at maturity, used as warm weather salad greens with spinach-like qualities. Cut as young seedlings or pick leaves as plant matures. Best salad quality comes from first 18” of growth. Mature plant is highly ornamental as seed bracts appear and enlarge in the same color as the leaves. Currently coming into use for floral arrangements. A good late summer pollen source for syrphid flies to help protect autumn crops from aphids.
Green Velvet' Orach Seeds, Organic
Leaves undulant and shimmering green, like a large spinach plugged in. Pinkish stems and seed heads are evidence of the close relation to Triple Purple, but its look is quite opposite. Like a lot of sibs come to think of it. Vigorous type with large leaves. Farm Original Variety!
Certified Organic Seed!
How to grow orach from seed
Rake in level seed bed, direct sow after last frost. Keep moist to ensure germination. Or start indoors 4 weeks before last frost, transplant out after frost. Sow spring and mid summer for second harvest. Easy to save seed. Soil pH 5.6-7.8. Hardiness zones 11.
Usual seed life: 6 years.
Harvest leaves to eat raw or cooked. The leaves are sweet and lack the oxalic taste of true spinach. Continue to eat green leaves as the plant goes to seed; it is never bitter. Orach will grow to six feet as seed sets. Plant in succession for a continuous spring-summer-fall harvest. Will withstand light frost.
