Edraianthus
Edraianthus is a small genus of flowering plants in the bellflower family Campanulaceae. Edraianthus species are native to mountains of the Balkan, including Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, and as far as Romania, Italy and Greece.
Grassy Bells (Edraianthus graminifolius) - Perfect for the rock or alpine garden, start Grassy Bells seeds for an ornamental grass with a surprise. This ornamental grass has tufts of narrow grass-like leaves, and in early summer, lovely upward facing purple flower clusters appear. The flowers are large in comparison to the little tuft of grassy leaves, and they can reach 2 inches across. Edraianthus tenuifolius Grassy Bells is native to the Balkans, and it is well-suited to containers, rockeries, or alpine gardens. It does not like to be wet during the winter, so good drainage is critical. A synonymous botanical name is Wahlenbergia tenuifolia. This ornamental grass grows best in sun to partial shade. Once it is established, it is drought tolerant.
How To Grow Ornamental Grasses: Sow Edraianthus seeds indoors in late winter. If no germination at typical room temperature in 2 to 3 weeks, move the seeds to a temperature of less than 41F until germination occurs. These ornamental grass seeds are small, so press them into the soil and finely cover. Many gardeners will place the Grassy Bells seeds in a cold frame outdoors where the germination can occur slowly.
