Earth Tones Dent Corn Seed - Ornamental & Edible; used for fall decorations, Ground into flour, or used as feed for birds and other animals.
This dent flour corn variety has an ear 8-10 inches in length. The remarkable trait of this dent corn lies in the beautiful muted colors in the ear. They are soft colors- the earthtones of gold, bronze, mauve/pink, green, browns, blues and shades in between predominate. The colors remind one of late summer or fall . The kernels of the corn are NOT the shiny, deep intense colors found in Indian Corn. The ears contain many of the soft colors found in nature near harvest time. One more important fact- it is an early dent variety. It has a maturity of 85-95 days. The beautiful ears can be used for fall decorations, ground into flour, or used as feed for birds and other animals.
Sow seeds directly in the garden in spring after soil has warmed. Does best in deeply cultivated soil that is high in nitrogen. To aid pollination, avoid planting in a single row. For succession, plant every 3 weeks until early summer.
Normally dry corn is left out for several frosts, but the ears may be picked after the husks begin drying. Bring husked ears under cover to complete drying. Popcorn should be harvested when kernels are fully mature (hard and glossy) or they won't pop well. After husking, spread out the ears in a dry, airy place and allow to "cure" for several weeks. The ideal moisture content for popcorn is 13-14.5%. Periodic test-popping will tell you when the kernels are dry enough to store, either on the cob or shelled.
DAYS TO MATURITY:
Maturity was recorded here at our farm. (Lat. 44.5°N). Corn will generally mature earlier farther south, later farther north, all environmental conditions being equal.
