Shrubs for Birds & Wildlife

award-winning Syringa vulgaris 'Primrose' is an upright, deciduous shrub with conical panicles of slightly fragrant, pale creamy-yellow flowers.

Blooming in late spring, the ravishing blossoms last 3-4 weeks and make a rare and beautiful display.Lilac, ‘Primrose’ – this is a rare buttery-yellow Lilac that is much sought after but seldom found. The color actually deepens & grows more intense with age. ‘Primrose’ is beloved in Europe but hard to find here in the States. Exceptionally fragrant blooms are superb for cutting and the perfume will fill your whole house! This unique cultivar bears blossoms in midseason. It forms a shrub 12 feet high by 8 feet wide that is covered with gorgeous sprays of flowers in spring. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Plant your lilac in well-drained soil. Lilac flowers are beloved for bouquets, and when in bloom, hummingbirds and butterflies are drawn to them. Lilacs are generally a forgiving bunch, tolerant of roadside sites and neglect.

Lilacs have an aroma many associate with feelings of “home” or other pleasant memories. The clusters of fragrant purple flowers that adorn the lilac bush in the late spring means that summer is just around the corner. They make a wonderful cut flower and look great with peonies or roses. The Lilac is a very common ornamental plant in gardens and parks, because of the attractive, sweet smell of its flowers. It grows best in a sunny location.

The Lilac is a reliable spring-flowering shrub for cold winter landscapes. They are excellent as a specimen/accent or in small groups, shrub borders, hedges or screens. Lilacs are also great for cottage gardens and as margins of woodland gardens. Great cut flower. If you want to attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies to your landscape, lilacs are a great choice for this. The characteristics that make these species so visually appealing – showy flowers, winter color – are some of Nature’s most powerful draws for the animal kingdom. Turn your yard into a naturally balanced eco-system! You’re sure to enjoy these plants for a lifetime. They provide food, shelter, and nesting. Plant your backyard sanctuary today!

Planting Instructions: Widely adaptable to soil type and soil moisture. The plant grows on soils that are moist and moderately fertile, and it is somewhat shade tolerate. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.
