Extra Information
Average Seeds Per Ounce: 110
You can grow Tom Thumb peas in flower pots, window boxes or in your garden. First available in the 1850s, Tom Thumb peas are an heirloom vegetable. This miniature plant is a dwarf pea variety that grows to a height of 12 inches, but produces full-sized pea pods. An heirloom variety is a nonhybrid plant, which means you can save the seeds to plant for next year.
1
Plant Tom Thumb pea seeds starting in March for spring plantings and starting in the second week of August for fall plantings.
2
Prepare at least the top 4 inches of soil before sowing the seeds. Work the soil with a shovel or hoe to loosen up clumps of dirt and remove rocks or other debris.
3
Place the seeds in a bowl and soak them for 24 hours in room temperature water before planting.
4
Choose a sunny location in your garden or on your patio for planting Tom Thumb peas. Plant the peas in sandy or loamy, well-drained, alkaline soil with a pH range between 6 and 7.5.
5
Sow the seeds in a small planter, garden bed or cold frame. Place the seeds 2 inches apart, 3 inches deep and space the rows 10 inches apart.
6
Water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist, but not wet, until the seeds germinate.
7
Expect the seeds to germinate to germinate between seven to 10 days after planting and mature within 50 to 55 days.
8
Make several successive plantings three weeks apart throughout the spring to have a constant supply.
