Moringa oleifera , commonly referred to simply as "Moringa" (from Tamil : Murungai (முருங்கை ) and Malayalam : Murunggi ), is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Moringa , which is the only genus in the family Moringaceae. It is an exceptionally nutritious vegetable tree with a variety of potential uses. The tree itself is rather slender, with drooping branches that grow to approximately 10 m in height. Growing Info:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
Other: seeds normally germinate in 7-30 days at diurnally alternating temperatures of 86 and 68 degrees F.
Planting Instructions:
Plant seeds 1/4" deep in well-drained, sandy soil mixed with mulch or organic material and light fertilizer in large pot.
Top with about 1” of mulch.
Do NOT soak seeds or remove hard seed shell or “wings”.
Maintain full sun exposure and warm environment of 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Set pot on black plastic garbage bag to increase heat until seeds sprout.
Water lightly daily until seeds sprout in about 1-2 weeks; do NOT over-water!
Seedlings grow quickly and might reach a height of 15' in one year.
Cut tops of trees to encourage branching at lower levels.
Cultivate by cuttings: use minimum 3/4" diameter branch.
Moringa has drought-resistance, but is NOT cold tolerant. Freezes will cause it to die back.
Good salt tolerance.
Rate of growth per year is relative to the number of hours of full sun per day.
